F.A.Q. on how to set up a legal entity in Portugal
-
Yes. Foreign individuals and companies can fully own a Portuguese company. You do not need to be a resident, but you'll need a Portuguese tax number (NIF) and a legal representative if you're not based in the country.
-
A subsidiary is a separate legal entity incorporated under Portuguese law. It has its own tax ID, can operate independently, and limits liability to the local entity.
A branch, on the other hand, is an extension of a foreign company. It is not a separate legal entity, so the parent company remains fully liable for its operations in Portugal. -
The creation of the company is very quick, and can be done in 24h. However, it takes 2 to 4 weeks to have a fully operational entity ready to trade. This depends on the documentation, preferred set up, bank account setup, and whether the shareholders are individuals or corporate entities.
-
You'll typically need:
A Portuguese tax number (NIF) for each shareholder and director
Company name approval
Articles of association
Proof of registered address
Identification documents
BRIDGE IN handles all of this for you.
